Chapter 1
To Rise
The Pit, the Foundry
Heat is the first thing you remember.
Not your name. Not your past. Just heat—indifferent, industrial, and hungry.
It licks at your skin from below, rising in waves that don’t care whether they’re burning trash or flesh. It seethes from beneath you, searing through flesh and bone. Your back is pressed against a mound of bodies and scrap, slick with grease and dried blood. Metal grinds far below, a slow, chewing thunder. You drag air into your lungs.
It tastes like ash, hot metal, cleaning acid, and a chemical bite that makes your eyes water the instant you try to open them.
You do anyway.
The world explodes in orange.
Ahead, a vast furnace throat yawns open like a god made of fire. A jagged conveyor belt drags you and a heap of ‘biological waste’ toward that glow, inch by groaning inch. Sparks leap with each convulsion of the chain.
The Pit around you is a metal canyon: walls of scorched chute plating, rusted gantries overhead, cables hanging like nooses. The air itself trembles with the roar of incinerators.
You shouldn’t be here.
A brand burns on your forearm—angry and fresh. Jagged lines form a sigil you don’t recognize, raw against blistered skin. Your body feels wrong. As if your bones were taken apart and reassembled by someone who had a diagram but no respect.
Your hand twitches.
Then claws.
You are alive.
You are not supposed to be.
